Student Awards
Newcomb

Congratulations Benjamin Newcomb, PhD Candidate in the Department of Civil and Resource Engineering at Dalhousie University on receiving the 2023 G.J. Jackson Scholarship in recognition of his work in the area of welded steel connections. The award, currently valued at $25,000, was conferred to Benjamin on Wednesday, September 30th at the 94th Canadian Steel Conference, hosted by CISC in Toronto. It is the first time ever (i.e., in 35 years) that the G.J. Jackson Fellowship has been awarded to a student at Dalhousie.

Drs. Somers and Kurylyk were recently at the Canadian Geophysical Union meeting where several CRE Students received awards! Congratulations go out to the following Graduate Students:

  • Jenacy Samways received the 2023 Canadian Geophysical Union Campbell Scientific Award for Best Master's Student Presentation
  • Julia Cantelon received the 2023 Canadian Geophysical Union Don Gray Award for Best Student Paper in Hydrology and was finally honored for her 2021 Canadian Geophysical Union Don Gray Scholarship 
  • Hayden Tackley received the 2023 Canadian Society for Agricultural and Forest Meteorology Student Poster Award

Sarah Hall Engineering Dalhousie

Congratulations also go out to Sarah Hall, Civil Engineering Undergraduate Student on receiving an Undergraduate Hydrogeology Award at the Geological Society of America Meeting in Pittsburgh for her research on Sable Island ponds and groundwater.

Canadian Institute of Steel Construction H.A. Krentz Award
Tousignant

For the second time in five years, the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) presented Dr. Kyle Tousignant, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, with the H.A. Krentz Research award. Congratulations Dr. Tousignant! This award recognizes the researcher with the highest ranked proposal in CISC's annual research grants competition based on the special merit and interest of their topic, and with promise that it will make a significant contribution to advances in the economy and safety of steel structures.

Congratulations to CRE's Dr. Barret Kurylyk on winning the Early Career Hydrogeologist Award!
